Why does the speed test website show a lower speed than I expect?

Every speedtest website, without exception, measures your unused speed, not your total speed. In other words, it measures how much of your total bandwidth is available during the test, not the capacity of your connection.

For example, if you have a 10 Mbps connection from PaNETma and a speed test website shows your speed as being 2 Mbps, it means that 8 Mbps were being used, on your network, during the test.

If you want the unused capacity to equal the total capacity then you must disconnect all other devices, and turn off all applications, before running the test.

If you want to have more unused capacity, without decreasing your bandwidth utilization, then the solution is to upgrade to a higher capacity connection.
